HIANN Cognitive Development Class
Summer is almost over so taking in a bit more of some outdoor recreational therapy. It was a beautiful Tahoe night for our members to have dinner before the show and watch The Hound of Baskervilles at Sand Harbor. Our members loved laughing at the incredible actors whose performance was perfect.
HIANN WALK & ROLL
HIANN Cognitive Development Training
Another HIANN sponsored social program is its Making Headway and Travelers Support Groups Bowling Tournament at Carson Lanes in Carson City. While not really a tournament since no official scores were kept, it is always a close match for highest game. In addition to bowling, HIANN provided pizza and drinks for all. Several new members also joined the fun.
Each year since 2014, HIANN has sponsored at least 10 members to attend an extensive cognitive development training course to help them improve their memory and organizational skills. After a TBI it is common for people to have problems with attention, concentration, speech and language, learning and memory, reasoning, planning and problem-solving. The cognitive development training course helps TBI survivors learn tools and techniques to improve their abilities in these areas. This is one of HIANN's most popular resource programs for its members.
HIANN and Kids & Horses
HIANN sponsors a wonderful yoga class at its Making Headway and Travelers Support Group meetings for 10 members. The classes are taught by HIANN TBI Survivor and member Lyndsay. It was great to see the focus everyone had and they all enjoyed it very much. Thanks Lyndsay!
HIANN hosted a community awareness event in Carson City in association with the Galaxy Theater, Nevada Department of Transportation, and the Bike Habitat. The event was held in conjunction with the movie "Concussion" starring Will Smith about the discovery by Dr. Bennett Omalu of CTE in the brains of NFL players. Several HIANN members were also fortunate enough to hear Dr. Omalu's speech live at UNR. HIANN members sold raffle tickets for two bikes donated by the Bike Habitat, along with handing out free bike helmets for the first 150 children and/or adults who needed one. HIANN also provided special safety information and helmet fitting instructions.
Another HIANN tradition is our annual Christmas Party. While it began decades ago as a potluck dinner, it has become so popular among members and guests that HIANN now holds it at a local restaurant. The Christmas Dinner is a time to enjoy and reflect on the hard work and great fun HIANN members do to help brain injury survivors put their lives back together "piece by piece" through support, empowerment, resources, public awareness, social events and brain injury prevention programs. HIANN sends a big Holiday THANK YOU to all of you who support the services and programs we provide to Brian Injury Survivors, their families, and caregivers. Without the support of our members and friends none of this would be possible.
HIANN at the Movies
As part of HIANN's TBI prevention program, HIANN hands out bicycle helmets, donated by the Nevada Department of Transportation, to adults and children who either don't have a bicycle helmet or don't currently use one. Three big events for HIANN are held at (1) the Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum in Reno, where we give away about 150 helmets, (2) at the Galaxy Theater in Carson City, where we give away about 300 helmets and (3) at the Washoe Native American Head Start programs in Carson City and Gardnerville, where we give away about 100 helmets. So hundreds of children and adults are riding safer thanks to the combined efforts of HIANN and NDOT.
HIANN Yoga Classes
One of HIANN's first social programs is it annual summer picnic at Bowers Mansion. Attendance usually numbers in excess of 40 members and guests. Our children and grandchildren participate in a big water fight. It was wonderful to see so many of our friends and members get together for this annual event. This is a time to just enjoy each others company, have some fun and relax. We work so hard most of the year it is nice to just enjoy a casual summer picnic together.

During the warm summer days in Northern Nevada, HIANN invites members and guests to spend a day at the beach at Tahoe or go for a hike in the mountains. This just another way HIANN provides healthy recreational activites to enrich its members lives.
Here are a few more pictures from HIANN Walk & Roll fundraising events. If you enjoyed reviewing the activities and services HIANN provides to the community and its members, your generous donation would be greatly appreciated.
As part of its Community Awareness Program, HIANN participates in the annual Nevada Day Parade in downtown Carson City. HIANN's float consists of a Rock Crawler pulled behind a pickup. We decorate the float with HIANN banners, US and Nevada flags, and other fun stuff. HIANN members hand out NDOT backpacks, bike helmets, and reflective slap bands. We also give USA/NV flag pins to veterans. Approximately 50,000 attendees come to the parade every year. There are several load speaker announcements of the parade entrants along the route so HIANN receives great public awareness and the cost to enter is very inexpensive. This event accommodates all of HIANN's Brain Injury Survivors and Members. It is great fun and all who attend really enjoy it.
HIANN provides financial support to its members who want to participate in the Kids & Horses therapeutic riding programs. Kids & Horses mission is to provide safe and educational equine-assisted therapeutic riding to children and adults with disabilities. Despite the organization’s name, special needs individuals of all ages are eligible for assistance. Participants don’t “age out” if they benefit from equine therapy. Lessons are individually designed to achieve predetermined therapeutic goals, and are tailored for each rider’s specific needs, ability, and stamina.
HIANN hosts approximately 25 members and guests to an art class at Van Gogh & Vino in Carson City. Everyone has a blast and who knew that so many talented artists were in our organization.
HIANN members enjoy the benefit of many services and activities throughout the year at no cost since most have very limited funds. A big thanks goes out to the many UNR Interns who assist HIANN members with these services and activities. Below are just a few of the services and activities that HIANN provides to its members each year. For a complete list, click on the "Calendar of Events" tab above. HIANN membership is open to all individuals, non-profit and corporate or professional entities that have an interest in acquired brain injury, including Traumatic Brain Injury, resulting from car accidents, falls, assaults, sports injuries, strokes, tumors and other sources of injury. Click on the "Contact Us" tab to write, call or email us for information on HIANN membership.

HIANN Out to the Ball Game
As part of HIANN's Social Program, Members and Guests went out to the Aces game on Wednesday July 8th. However, there was a 2 hour rain delay so the game did not start until 9:00. That was too late for most us so we just watched the music videos for an hour or so and enjoyed each others company. The Aces did give everyone a rain check so we'll try again during the next dry weather spell.
