We Need Volunteers !!!!!!
Children’s Nevada Discovery Museum - Reno Bike Safety Day
HIANN has scheduled a bike safety day at the Children’s Museum in Reno where HIANN Members will provide bicycle helmets and bike safety materials for the Museum’s patrons. Volunteers will spend the afternoon fitting helmets on children and adults. This is one of our most worthwhile projects by providing equipment that will help protect children and adults from the possibilities of a traumatic brain injury. All of the equipment that our HIANN volunteers will be giving away is provided by the Nevada Department of Transportation.
And after the event, all HIANN volunteers will be provided dinner at a local downtown Reno eatery!!!!!
Would you like to help us for this volunteer project? If so, please contact Jeff McDaniel at email@example.com or call/text (209) 482-8562. We need approximately 5 - 6 volunteers.
When: June 26, Wednesday from 2:30 PM to approximately 5:30 PM, followed by dinner
Location: Nevada Discovery Museum, 490 S Center St, Reno, NV 89501-2105

Million Dollar Quartet - Musical
Come join HIANN members and guests to see this wonderful musical, Million Dollar Quartet, at the beautiful outdoor Sand Harbor Shakespeare Festival Theatre on the shores of Lake Tahoe. On December 4, 1956, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley fatefully found themselves together in a Memphis recording studio. The historic rock ‘n’ roll jam session that resulted was electrifying. Step back in time to experience this irresistible tale of broken promises, secrets and celebrations – which boasts powerhouse performances and an incredible score of rock ‘n’ roll, R&B and country hits, including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Walk the Line,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Hound Dog” and more.
HIANN purchased 42 tickets which are available on a first-come first-serve basis, so if you are interested please contact Jeff McDaniel with your reservation via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or call/text to (209) 482-8562. Each member can bring one guest. Caution!!! Tickets will go very fast and survivors will be given priority. In addition, HIANN has reserved a group of picnic tables inside the venue, so if you are interested, bring a picnic basket or purchase dinner at the festival and join our members in a bit of socializing prior to the start of the musical.
When: Sunday, July 21st - Picnic starts at 5:30 PM - Show starts at 7:30. Arrive no later than 7:00.

HIANN is sponsoring a water sports event through Achieve Tahoe for 15 interested HIANN survivors. Achieve Tahoe provides all equipment including adaptive devices for survivors with physical disabilities. There will be a Delicious hosted picnic lunch at noon and then back to the lake for more fun. See the Achieve Tahoe website event video at https://achievetahoe.org/content/sierra-summer-sports for activity information.
Guests, family and caregivers are encouraged to attend to take pictures and provide transportation. Lunch will be provided to family or caregivers by HIANN; however, due to the cost of the event HIANN is only sponsoring members that are survivors. If space becomes available, caregivers can participate at the cost of $80 per person.
Once you make your reservation, should you cancel, HIANN will ask you to pay for your reservation, provided we cannot find a replacement survivor at the cost of $80. Reservations are due by May 9th. So, we have little time to confirm our participants.

Don’t Miss the HIANN Picnic, Barbeque, Raffle and Kayaking Event on August 18th
August 11th is the cutoff date for reservations!!!!!
If you have not already contacted us to make your reservation, please do so as soon as possible. The last day we will accept reservations is August 11th. We must make preparations for the picnic and we have at least 80 members, family and friends attending.
This is just a reminder that HIANN will provide barbequed entrees and cold drinks. We ask that everyone attending bring a food item that can be enjoyed by a lot of people such as a salad, deserts or another main dish. Please let Jeff know what dish you are planning to bring, if you have not already done so.
We will have many additional great prizes, but we still need raffle prizes, so please contact Alison Hume, if you have a prize to donate.
We have another special event planned. We are going to offer, on a first come first serve basis, a kayaking class for approximately 15 to 20 members starting at 2:00. Survivors will have first priority. Most of the kayaks are the tandem type, so we can accommodate survivors with mobility issues as long as they have a family member or caregiver to help paddle. Again, these will be available on a first come first serve basis and we already have a number of requests. Don’t wait to make your reservation.
Our barbeque will start promptly at noon and end by 1:00. Our raffle is scheduled from 1:00 to 2:00 and kayaking from 2:00 to 3:00. So please be on time or even a little early. Then after or event enjoy the beautiful beaches of San Harbor State Park.
Caution!!!! Parking will be very limited. Additional information will be provided to all attendees prior to the picnic. We want everyone to have a great time at this incredibly beautiful location, but parking spots will be at a premium. Those arriving late, will probably not find parking in the park and have to take a shuttle bus from Incline. Carpooling is highly encouraged.

Maggie and Sheri are accomplished chefs and instructors and will be sharing their expertise with us and discussing the importance of nutrition and your health, followed by a hands-on cooking demonstration. HIANN participants will be given personalized instruction on cooking a healthy meal. Recipes will be provided along with other surprises!!!!!

Physical Fitness Classes In Reno and Carson City Continue!!!!
The Head Injury Association of Northern Nevada (HIANN) has extended our physical fitness program. Classes will again be offered in both Reno and Carson City at no cost to our members provided we have a minimum of 10 participants in each class. Our personal trainers Rick Harness and Beata Domjan-Jarvis will continue as our instructors. Included in our program will be a free gym membership for any member and their caregiver. We should note that gym memberships are only provided to those members that are enrolled and participate in all classes. You must also be a member in good standing having paid your 2019 dues.
What is different about our class offering? HIANN will accept members that only want to workout on an occasional “drop-in” basis. HIANN will not pay for your gym memberships, however, the gym cost for drop-in attendance is only $5.00 per day. This adds flexibility to our program for members that just want to work out occasionally. If you decide to become a fulltime class participant at any time during the quarter, HIANN will pay for your fulltime gym membership at that time.
Reservations are required. Please contact Jeff McDaniel at firstname.lastname@example.org or call/text (209) 482-8562. HIANN has had the fortunate opportunity to be introduced to a local non-profit organization that provides custom made recumbent bikes at no cost to individuals that have disabilities. They make each custom recumbent bike in a wide range of sizes all made to meet an individual’s specific needs. The goal is to provide bikes that require a person to use their hand and foot combination to improve coordination, strength, and range of motion and to provide a wonderful mode of transportation. Please note that this program does not include regular two wheel bikes or two wheel recumbent bikes.
Only five (5) bikes are available, so unfortunately we cannot guarantee that every request can be filled. Survivors with physical disabilities will be given the highest priority .
How can you sign-up for this great chance to get a brand new bike made just for you!!!!!
All HIANN survivors with a disability and all HIANN members in good standing qualify. Please complete the following questions and send your responses to Jeff at firstname.lastname@example.org or call/text (209) 482-8562 with the answer to the questions below.
You must submit a brief one or two sentence description of your disability in writing or over the phone.
You must have a secure location to store your bike at your home or apartment.
You must have a safe and secure lock for your bike, when not being used at home. An example would be if you go to the grocery store, your bike must be securely locked while you shop. For those that are unable to provide this, HIANN can help.
You must be prepared to travel to Reno on April 14th at 1:00 to meet with an AMBUCS representative to have your bike designed to accommodate your specific needs. All bikes are custom made to these specifications. An appointment will be made for each request for fitting and pickup at a later date in June in Reno.
You must be willing to have your picture taken and used by the sponsoring non-profit companies.
Requests will be taken on a first come first serve basis and again we what to remind you that there is a chance that some requests may not be fulfilled. For those of you that have already sent a request to Jeff or signed-up in the past, simply complete the questions listed above.
